Tackling health inequalities within the Black, Asian, Minority and Ethnic (BAME) communities
Project Achievements
Self Help UK was awarded funding for 12 months from May 2022 to May 2023. Funded by the National Health Trust Community Trust (NHSCT), the project focused on tackling health inequalities within the Black, Asian, Minority and Ethnic (BAME) communities, to provide health information on the Covid-19 vaccine, and to address Long Covid in the community. Additionally, the funding aided Self Help UK to develop, train and restore BAME peer support groups in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.
Highlights
- The project supported peer support groups by identifying their training and funding needs through surveys and engagement with group leaders. Valuable insights were gathered to provide targeted support in areas like IT and funding.
- A funding webinar and small grants program were implemented, enhancing participants’ knowledge in finding and securing funding opportunities. Five groups successfully obtained small grants, with one group in the final stages of securing a substantial funding amount of £75,000.
- The project addressed challenges of Long Covid through surveys and presentations on medical advice, employment rights, and welfare support. The presentations provided valuable information and facilitated connections to relevant support networks for participants.
- The project actively engaged with the community through events like the “Welcome Back and Reconnect Event,” fostering collaboration among groups, organisations, and community members. Over 570 individuals participated in discussions about health inequalities, reducing isolation and creating a sense of belonging.
